Learnership Overview

Project management consists of the planning, organisation, motivation and the control and allocation of resources needed to achieve specific goals and objectives. The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with a foundation of basic project management knowledge and skills which can be used to build further project management related competencies. This qualification will give learners the knowledge and skill to put strategies together and the ability to implement the techniques and processes to manage projects.

On achieving this qualification, the learner will have competencies in:

  • A foundation of basic project management knowledge and skills which can be used to build further project management related competencies.
  • Competence to be an effective project team member.
  • Competence to provide administrative support to a project manager and team members. 
  • Competence to provide assistance to a project manager of medium to large projects.

Pre-requisites / Assumed Learning

Learners accessing this Learnership should be competent in:

• Communication at NQF level 3 (Grade 10)
• Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 3 (Grade 10)
• Computer Literacy at NQF level 3

Project Management Fundamentals

Unit 1: Explain the nature of a project
Unit 2: Explain the nature and application of project management
Unit 3: Explain the types of structures that are found in a project environment
Unit 4: Explain the application of organisation structure in a project management
Unit 5: Explain the major processes and activities required to manage a project

Project Meetings and Records Management

Unit 1: Explain the purpose, objective and scope of project meetings and/or workshops
Unit 2: Plan for a project meeting and/or workshop
Unit 3:Arrange and support a project meeting and/or workshop

Project Initiations and Scope Management

Unit 1:Contribute to the identification and co-operation of stakeholders, their roles, needs and expectations
Unit 2: Contribute to the identification, description and analysis of the project needs, expectations, constraints, assumptions, exclusion, inclusions and deliverables
Unit 3: Contribute to preparing and producing inputs to be used for further planning activities
Unit 4: Contribute to the monitoring of the achievement of the project’s scope

Project Support

Unit 1: Demonstrate an understanding of administrative systems required
Unit 2: Use standardized processes for identifying, securing and finding documents
Unit 3: Provide project templates to team members
Unit 4: Assist in preparing project documents for handover at the end of a project or a project phase/stage

Project Human Resource and Quality Management

Unit 1: Describe and explain the need for consistent processes and standards to achieve quality
Unit 2: Suggest actions, within own field of expertise, in support of the development of quality project deliverables
Unit 3: Conduct tests as per test plan and communicate tests results

Project Resources and Monitoring

Unit 1: Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose and process of scheduling project activities
Unit 2: Define and gather information about project activities from technical experts and within own field of expertise
Unit 3: Develop a simple schedule for a project or part thereof
