Qualification Overview

The National Certificate: Farming (NQF Level 2) is designed for learners who wish to advance their farming skills and knowledge. A learner assessed as competent against this qualification will be able to perform the necessary technical skills within the context of either agronomy, horticulture, or animal husbandry, as applicable to the agricultural commodity.

The learner will be able to operate as part of the operational team. In the case of the farm owner, the learner will be able to execute basic business skills and develop as a small, micro, or medium enterprise.

Key Objectives

  • Performing technical agricultural skills in agronomy, horticulture, or animal husbandry operations
  • Executing basic business skills for farm management and enterprise development
  • Producing quality agricultural products for local, national, and international markets
  • Understanding and applying communication and information management skills in farming contexts
  • Developing mathematical literacy for agricultural applications
  • Learning agricultural production fundamentals including pest and disease identification
  • Implementing quality control and health and safety measures
  • Supporting land reform processes and school leavers entering agriculture
  • Generating income through farming and trading commodities in SADC countries

Learning Modules

Module 1: Communication and Information Management

  • Identify personal values and ethics in the workplace
  • Access and use information
  • Maintain and adapt oral communication
  • Write for a defined context
  • Use language and communication in occupational learning programmes
  • Collect, use and communicate data that relates to farming

Module 2: Mathematical Literacy

  • Apply basic knowledge of statistics and probability to influence the use of data and procedures in order to investigate life-related problems
  • Demonstrate understanding of rational and irrational numbers and number systems
  • Identify, describe, compare, classify, and explore shape and motion in 2- and 3-dimensional shapes in different contexts
  • Use mathematics to investigate and monitor the financial aspects of personal and community life
  • Work with a range of patterns and functions and solve problems

Module 3: Agricultural Production Fundamentals

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of agricultural production systems
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the primary agriculture industry
  • Identify pests and diseases relevant to the agricultural commodity the learner is associated with
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on equipment and tools

Module 4: Business Skills and Management

  • Operate in a team
  • Perform quality checks
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic accounting practices
  • Demonstrate an understanding of contracts and their sources
  • Demonstrate an understanding of managerial expertise and administrative capabilities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of supply and demand, and the concept of production
  • Identify and discuss different types of business and their legal implications
  • Identify, discuss, describe and compare major economic systems with an emphasis on the South African economy

Module 5: Health and Safety

  • Demonstrate an understanding of HIV/Aids and its implications
  • Maintain hygiene measures
  • Maintain occupational health and safety
